Performance of A Lifetime Chance or Choice?

If the Internet is the perfect outer reflection of humanity’s Collective Mind (which it is), then movies are the perfect outer reflection of humanity’s Daily Life. Where else do we get to see, up front and personal, magnified and in vivid living color – macro photographic facial expressions, special effects generated from imagination gone wild, and an intensity of human emotions running the gamut from utter despair to sheer ecstasy? In every season there are productions and performances so compelling, so stirring and masterfully executed that they garner the crowning achievement of life portrayed on the silver screen: Academy Award winner – the performance of a lifetime.
Why do we love the Academy Awards? Certainly not because we get to listen to endless thank you’s to people for the most part unknown to us while hoping for those rare moments when someone gets creative and says something moving, clever, funny, or even outrageous. Yes, of course we love the glitz and the glamour. Yet, what keeps us mesmerized are those moments of vulnerability when award recipients stand before their peers and the world, bent awkwardly over microphones that we wonder why someone in production hasn’t adjusted to the proper height – and express amazement, humility, gratitude, and the magical bliss of being recognized for their performance of a lifetime.
So, what do we get out of watching them in their achievement of glory? A question worthy of contemplation…
Consider that when we witness the acknowledgment and reward of masterful performance it stirs the soulful passion to deliver the finest performance we are capable of in whatever role we’ve accepted from Central Casting. The Academy Awards are a great metaphor for life reminding us that a performance that moves others, that transforms one’s relationship to life and has the power to alter forever the way people think and the way they are with one another; the Performance of A Lifetime is possible.
I love what Penelope Cruz said as she was honored as Best Supporting Actress – that for her the Academy Awards ceremony is “a moment of unity for the world because art, in any form, is and has been and will always be our universal language.”
Why do we love the Academy Awards? In the presence of masterful performance we experience humanity’s upward spiral from mere mortals to divine geniuses. We love the Academy Awards because they are living proof that our greatest visions and dreams do in fact come to pass, and that there are spectacular roles made just for you and you alone!
Do such opportunities come by chance? Catch a few lucky breaks, get the right part and you’re on the metaphorical stage happily clutching the coveted golden statue? Hardly. What appears to us as a perfect, seamless production and effortless performance looks very different behind the scenes. We don’t see the work, the discipline, training, standard of excellence and bold and courageous actions it took to get there. Most importantly what we don’t see is that a performance of a lifetime begins with Intent – a conscious choice. To achieve a performance of a lifetime means immersing yourself completely in what is nearest and dearest to your heart in such a way that the daily discipline and focus is not tedious or arduous, instead it is exhilarating and exciting. The joy in living is the joy in giving…the best of what you’ve got.
We love the Academy Awards because they remind us that success is always a collaborative medium, that a contribution is only a contribution when it is appreciated by another, and that to achieve anything great means expanding beyond your current boundaries, again and again, throwing yourself into daunting situations and coming up triumphant.
The desire for excellence is heating up. In a meaningful way we all have not just an opportunity but a responsibility now to give the greatest performance of our life. We can take the Directorial cues from our changing economic landscape. All of us are ready for a new scene. Our faltering systems calling for re-takes present us with the opening to answer the calling, to heed the heart strings, to toss all fears to the wind and courageously follow our passions, attune to the energies, restructure ourselves and our lives. A performance of a lifetime happens not by chance but by choice.
