In the Hands of a Master

I had heard from two friends that Marty Weiner was an amazing healer. Coincidentally, I was preparing to re-launch New Paradigm Digest, and saw Marty at lunch. I shared my excitement about my blog with him and asked if he might be interested in an interview since I suspected he held a piece of the new paradigm of healing. He graciously agreed and a few days later it was time to experience his work firsthand.
When I walked into Marty’s Ojai office, like many others before me, I brought a history of physical aches and pains and some unresolved emotional wounds. Each of these pieces of my personal puzzle had become embodied and frozen in my muscles and bones. I felt at that moment like a physically and emotionally contracted man with diminished energy.
The vast majority of healers and doctors I have seen treat symptoms and take the patient’s history that includes our personal stories. Marty simply asked me, “what brought you here today?”
I presented him with three immediate challenges: a stiff neck, a pain in my lower back and a years old pain in my abdomen that no one had been able to diagnose or eliminate. He listened and, at the same time, I sensed him going beyond his question and my answers, tuning into my essence and energy and a few minutes later I was on his table and my session started.
Marty began by sensing and feeling several areas of my body and proceeded to subtly move my bones and muscles-never forcing, as if sculpting a masterpiece which he does most days as a sculptor-his other joy in life. He first works on my left side, then the right moving shoulders, neck, back, legs and joints and finally has me lie on my back.
During this time, I am relaxed and aware of how the small moves he is making are beginning to open up my body in ways that no massage I have experienced has. I notice that I am allowing this to happen rather than fighting or being fearful of being hurt in any way. A deep trust has been established between us in minutes. Interesting. I relax more and more and my body continually responds as he lets me know “that’s great” and “wonderful” when I am able to move fluidly where a few minutes before my body was stiff.
As I am lying on my back in the final moments of the hands on portion of our session, I immediately notice a profound difference in how my body feels on the table-more relaxed and grounded and I feel energy running from the spot where the pain has been in my lower back to the center of my back as if the body is literally shifting long held postures.
When the session is over, Marty asks me to stand and we walk around the room together and I feel a new way of being in my body-a freedom, a looseness and lightness I don’t recall feeling since childhood. To have this kind of profound shift in my body in an hour session with anyone is something I would not have thought possible. But now I know it is not only possible but it has actually happened.
We sit opposite each other and talk about how my readiness to surrender my old contracted and protected stance in the world allowed his work to penetrate and affect the deep change it had. I was indeed tired of holding on to my positions and simply wanted to live in the moment without attachment. My session with Marty allowed this magic to happen and my body to relax for the first time in many years. It is clear to me that Marty is a man using his wonderful gifts to serve the world and I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to experience his extraordinary work.
At one point during our session, I told Marty I felt like a Stradivarius violin being played by a master and in our talk Marty explained his approach. “I feel the organic shape each client has become and then collaborate with them to liberate the perfection of their original energetic form through subtle movements.”
I think about how doctors take a history and refer to their charts to diagnose and treat their patients. In most cases, they are dealing with symptoms and often treating those symptoms with drugs to relieve or in many cases simply mask the symptoms. This external mechanical approach to treatment has been the norm for many years and misses the opportunity to explore the whole being.
In contrast, Marty’s new paradigm healing work explores the interconnected quantum field of possibility wherein the site of pain, for instance, may not originate there but be referred and by discovering its true source and relaxing long held blocks, a solution can manifest effortlessly.
It is this distinction and Marty’s sense that it’s a dance, an exploration and ultimately a collaboration with the innate intelligence of each client rather than operating from years of learned book knowledge that sets him apart from other healers. His intuition and ability to read each client are his greatest gifts.
Thanks to Marty, I have a new relationship with my body and therefore with the world. Marty acted as a catalyst that allowed the genius of my body to be liberated. My liberated body encourages my will to become more expressive. Marty could see my potential self as he does a finished sculpture in a piece of marble and his job in both cases is to free that potential by working with his intuitionally guided hands.
Looking back on my experience with Marty, what I love most about his way of working is his appreciation for and honoring of my body’s unique way of being in the world and his dedication to being an explorer and discoverer in the process taking place in the moment rather than an expert relying on learned knowledge from the past. This allows for a collaboration in which I discover new ways of moving and being in the world. This is a profound gift for both of us and it is the joy of discovery that makes Marty’s work so uniquely satisfying for he and his clients.
Although Marty doesn’t diagnose problems himself, because that would be counter to seeing the person as a whole rather than a collection of symptoms lumped into a disease category, he has worked successfully with people who were diagnosed medically with MS, herniated discs, drop foot, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, frozen shoulder, and a host of other situations. He has worked with people of all ages and backgrounds and clients include many well known actors, musicians, athletes, political figures, and business leaders.”
I moved from my history into the mystery that will help me develop my mastery, in providing my legacy project, New Paradigm Digest, to blossom and thrive. For this, I am eternally grateful to Marty.
