Flash Sales for Charity Reinvigorate the Philanthropic Lifestyle Brand Concept

Thanks to the success of TOMS Shoes, it seems like a new lifestyle company putting charitable giving at the center of its brand debuts every week. Jewelry, rugs, and eyeglasses have all been transformed into instruments of philanthropy, supporting causes from clean oceans to rural development in Afghanistan.

So Sevenly, a newcomer in the crowded space, may appear to be riding the coattails of other ideas and businesses that have come before it. But several tweaks to the clothes-for-good business model make Sevenly stand out. Every week, the company posts a new T-shirt and hoodie design to its site: Each seven-day flash sale benefits a different charity. Every $22 t-shirt sold offers $7 to the charity of the week, 30 percent of the revenue. Just seven months after launching, the Fullerton, California-based company has already sold nearly 27,000 T-shirts and raised about $200,000 for charity.

“Sevenly is a connector,” says Ryan Wood, the company’s director of public awareness and partnerships. “What our customers appreciate most is that we connect them with charities and causes they wouldn’t otherwise know about. A T-shirt is simply the vehicle for what we hope is a lifetime connection and passion for a charity and cause.” Wood says Sevenly first selects important causes to fund, then finds a specific charity that seems to be operating most effectively in each cause’s space. This week, proceeds will fund research and advocacy group Autism Speaks—in the past, Sevenly’s given to everyone from the Breast Cancer Foundation to the anti-slavery organization Somamly Mam Foundation. Charities aspiring to work with Sevenly can apply here.

From Institute of Noetic Sciences

Ed. Note: There are few scholars in the world better equipped to evaluate where civilization is headed than eminent professor of philosophy and cultural history Richard Tarnas. In the following dialogue, excerpted and edited from the Institute of Noetic Sciences’ teleseminar series, Shifting Paradigms, IONS Senior Scientist Dean Radin talks with Dr. Tarnas about the notion of paradigm shifts and what is required for a society to make such a leap. To read a chapter from Tarnas’s book, Cosmos and Psyche, go here.

Radin: In your first book, The Passion of the Western Mind (1993), you explain the context in which we find ourselves, how we got where we are. Most people most of the time don’t think much about why they believe the things that they do and why society works the way that it does. In your second book, Cosmos and Psyche (2006), you use an enchanted view of reality, in a sense, to show why some of the aspects of traditional astrology are actually quite useful in seeing where we are and where we are going.

Tarnas: I wrote The Passion of the Western Mind as a kind of overview of the history of the Western worldview up until the late twentieth century. I wanted to try to see the larger paradigm shifts that took place and the major factors that were at work in forming our current worldview. We really can’t understand ourselves or the present without having a good grasp of the historical factors that shaped us. I love that sentence from historian Daniel Boorstein: “Trying to understand and create the future without knowing the past is like planting cut flowers.” We need a sense of our roots. The Passion of the Western Mind gives that kind of overview.

It’s particularly focused on the West, starting from the ancient Greeks, because that’s the cultural worldview that is so fundamental in shaping the global context today. For better or worse, modernity is the most powerful influence on our global civilization now, and that history goes from the ancient Greeks up through the Roman period, right through the medieval era to the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the scientific revolution, and so forth, up to the modern and postmodern periods. In my first book, I attempted to see the big picture as well as the ways in which a culture’s philosophy, religion, and science interact in any given era; it will shape the worldview, the cosmology, the notion of the divine, the notion of our understanding of the human self and its place in the universe. All these things constitute a worldview. So, in that book, I sought to understand that evolution of consciousness as well as I could.

My second book, Cosmos and Psyche, is actually the reason I wrote the first book, which served as a kind of prelude and a foundation to the second one—I’ll go into that in a second.

But perhaps we might want to engage some of the larger issues that go into paradigm shifts and why a culture seems ready or ripe for a major change of vision at a particular time? What makes a difference?

The new field of Social Healing promises to make this an ongoing activity in multiple forms with major impacts. This exciting development in the human journey promises profound change in resolving human conflict and, in fact, has already done so in many countries. We are witnessing the birth of a powerful conflict resolution tool that may well spell an end to war and the arguments leading up to it or, at the very least, may make this world a far more peaceful place through myriad forms of compassion in action.

Judith Thompson and James O’Dey are pioneers in this emergent field and Judith has written a brilliant overview that beautifully articulates the story and framework of Social Healing. I invite you to enjoy her article and if you want to know more to download the free The Social Healing Project Report available at http://www.charityfocus.org/docs/books/socialhealing.pdf

We Are Between Stories
by Judith Thompson

We live in an exciting time. As cultural historian, Thomas Berry put it: “We are between stories.” The old story — bracketed on the one side by reductionist scientific materialism, and on the other by institutional religious dogmas — is no longer able to guide us toward human or planetary flourishing. Instead, the chasms created by both science and religion, and the various social philosophies they spawned, are implicated in pushing us toward the precipitous edge upon which we now stand. At this edge we see both breakdowns and breakthroughs.

While the story of scientific materialism has been part of our evolutionary journey, it has created a map of reality — a worldview — that de-legitimized a vast portion of wisdom and experience. It placed reason over intuition, intellect over emotion, material over spiritual, objectivity over subjectivity, exteriority over interiority, and condensed this into a story that we live in a mechanistic, material world that can only be known through objective and measurable observation in which human reason reigns supreme.

Institutionalized religion upheld a story that gave male authority figures the power to interpret and mediate purported divine
laws and construct theological justifications for power over women, children, the natural world, and non-believers. While scientific and
religious stories were at odds with each other, both saw it in their interests to label metaphysical or spiritual worldviews outside their boundaries as heresy, superstition or witchcraft.

Yet ironically, science itself has now begun to step into the realm of the mystics. The “new sciences” story finds biologists and neuroscientists astounded by the hitherto unstudied capacities of the human brain and heart, indicating our ability to intentionally amplify love and compassion. It finds psychologists exploring the territory of contemplatives and revealing a map of human consciousness far beyond the individual ego-self. It finds physicists discovering that the presumed separation of observed and observer doesn’t exist.

Much like the African worldview of Ubuntu — “I am because you are” – all things exists as a communion of subjects, not an assortment of objects. The new story frames the human journey, not within the context of tribes or nations, but embedded in a constantly evolving planet and cosmos, interconnected and interdependent at every level. The implications of this framing could signal dramatic changes in
every field of human endeavor. The trends we are seeing within restorative justice, reconciliation, transitional justice, dialogue and other forms of peace practice, are evidence of new ways of addressing human conflict that are moving beyond the old dichotomies. We have chosen to name this trend social healing partly because we see an evolving paradigm that is not fundamentally hinged around the dualities of good vs. bad and right vs. wrong, but is rather inclined toward viewing human conflict through the lens of wounding and healing. Social healing, then, is not guided by revenge, retribution or punishment, but rather by the compassionate response of relating to all people — victims, transgressors and bystanders alike – as inextricably connected.

At a minimum, this is a piece of potential positive news to start the year. It will be very interesting to see how this story unfolds.

Following are my notes from Terrence McNally’s interview with Simon Mainwaring of We First.

me first hurts millions-we first is about profit and purpose-customers and companies as partners

simon, the author was an-australian-lawyer-then advertising-in au, london and us nike-he found himself at a loss 5 years ago-is this it? more of the same-at same time he had a personal crisis-5 messages from mother sister saying father needs to talk with you-he died-hadn’t seen him for 5 years-as a father made mindful of his time on planet

read the transcript by bill gates-govt and philanthropy cant fix the world-need private sector-then wrote the book-

we first is a new way of looking at the world an alternative to me first-overconsumption has led to-new austerity as a reaction-at the expense of planet-this system is unsustainable-we are a mutually dependent community via social media-what happens on wall st affects main st.

we have lost our sense of community and mutual dependence-the scale of current problems cannot be solved in the way we are used to operating-brands cant survive if middle class is disappearing 1 in 6 below poverty-some companies are looking to emerging markets that are growing 20%-but that is short sighted..

consumers must say: if you want our dollars, we want you to be socially responsible.

capitalism has many variations of practice-nothing will change if we do not as consumers assume our right to make change-e.g. uk, greece, occupy movement

old incentives and risks are way off base-

we are in a new period of transparency-Starbucks partnered with credit unions-to support start ups-they said no to dc and campaign donations and took it upon themselves to help small biz…

auto companies needed govt support so long standing influencers in washington have given way to listening to consumers-and as a result initiated a green tech race-

4.2 billion was shifted to credit unions in one week.

we must impact bottom line-shared responsibility affect bottom line

some of ways in which we can take back our power-stand for what we believe in

no longer us vs them- now partnership-

86% want companies to put social before profits

shareholders need to realize that a short term view can promote a long term disaster

well being of society and planet is critical

celebrate socially resp-call irresponsibility

as citizens and consumers-be more mindful of shopping-use social tools

you can now download goodguide.com app that turns your phone into a bar code scanner and provides a-social benefit rating at supermarket point of purchase so shoppers can vet every item…600,000 products are currently in the data base.

brandkarma.com-customer opinions-rating on impact on society

socialvest.com-if the product is included in their data base, a portion goes to a cause of your choice- …300 major brands-i tunes, gap, target, etc.

socialvibe.com-companies are thinking-we need to pay you for your attention-see a best buy ad-best buy makes a donation to a cause you care about…

emergence of these tools to increase authenticity and transparency-consumer leverage is dollars in pocket

On the surface of the Earth exactly now there is war and violence and everything looks horrible. But, simultaneously, something quiet, calm and hidden is happening and certain people are being called by a higher light. A quiet revolution is settling from the inside out. From bottom to top. It is a global operation. A spiritual conspiracy. There are cells from this operation in every nation on the planet.

You will not watch us on TV. Or read about us in newspapers. Or hear our words on radios. We do not seek glory. We do not use uniforms. We arrive in several different shapes and sizes. We have costumes and different colors. Most work anonymously. Silently we work out of the scene. In every culture in the world. In large and small cities, in the mountains and valleys. In the farms, villages, tribes and remote islands.

We might cross paths on the streets. And not realize … We follow in disguise. We are behind the scenes. And we do not care about who wins the gold of the result, and Yes, that the work gets performed. And once in a while we will cross paths on the streets. We exchange looks of recognition and continue following our path. During the day many are disguised in their normal jobs. But at night behind the scenes, the real work begins.

Some call us army of consciousness. Slowly we are building a new world. With the power of our hearts and minds. We follow with joy and passion. Our orders reach us from the Central Spiritual Intelligence. We’re throwing soft bombs of love without anyone noticing; poems, Hugs, songs, photos, movies, fond words, meditations and prayers, dances, social activism, websites, blogs, acts of kindness …

We express ourselves in a unique and personal way. With our talents and gifts. Being the change we want to see in the world. This is the force that moves our hearts. We know that this is the only way to accomplish the transformation. We know that with the silence and humbleness we have the power of all oceans together. Our work is slow and meticulous. As in the formation of mountains.

Love will be the religion of the 21 century. Without educational prerequisites. Without ordering an exceptional knowledge for your understanding. Because it is born of the intelligence of the heart. Hidden for eternity in the evolutionary pulse of every human being.<

Be the change you want to see happen in the world. Nobody else can make this work for you.

We’re recruiting. Perhaps you will join us. Or maybe you have already joined. All are welcome. The door is open.

WeFirst believes the following principles should guide our business practices:

* We believe companies have a right to innovation, entrepreneurship and profit making while consumers have a right to a healthy society and planet to live on.

* We recognize an interdependent, global community requires an expanded definition of self-interest that acknowledges the needs of all inhabitants of the planet.

* We define success through prosperity that means the well being of many, not the wealth of a few.

* We believe that future of profit is purpose.

* We believe that the interests of companies and consumers are best served through a sustainable practice of capitalism – economically, morally, ethically, environmentally, and socially.

* We believe that corporations and consumers owe each other an equal duty of transparency, authenticity, and accountability.

* We believe that social technology, business, and shopping have the potential to change our world through new modes of engagement, collaboration, and contribution.

* We believe the values that inform our daily practice of capitalism include: sustainability, fairness of rewards, fiscal responsibility, accountability, purposefulness, engagement, and global citizenship.

* We believe that corporations and consumers are duty-bound to serve as custodians of global well being for this and future generations.

* We believe that the private sector must cooperate, collaborate and coordinate with governments and NGOs to create a unified force for social good.

It’s here! Foster Gamble’s new paradigm film, THRIVE. Like NPD, this is a solutions oriented project. What makes this film so interesting is that it was produced by a member of the P&G empire and member of the 1% who has worked to make the company better and used his personal funds to make this powerful film. He is a great example for other legacy family members of other large companies.

Before you watch it, you may want to enjoy the interview with Foster conducted by Worldwide Tipping Point. The info on that interview and a link to view the film follow. My sense is that this fiim will do as well or better than the surprise hit What the Bleep a few years back and the great new online film distribution platform it is available on, Play It Forward, offers you the opportunity to enjoy the film and pass it along as a gift to friends you feel would really enjoy it. Please let me know your thoughts once you have viewed it.

After spending 8 years and millions of dollars to create the documentary THRIVE: What on Earth Will It Take? I am honored to have Foster Gamble on Worldwide Tipping Point today in what I believe is his first public interview since the film’s release!

So what is this THRIVE film all about? It will become quickly evident in this interview what THRIVE is hear to say, and I encourage you to check out our dialogue (and the movie) straight away!

Interestingly, Foster Gamble is a direct descendent of the Proctor & Gamble empire and I ask him some pretty pointed questions regarding his unbiased ability to shine a light on the unsustainable nature of our financial systems while obviously coming from a ‘financially elite’ family as described in the film…and his response is fascinating!

THRIVE weaves all sorts of topics, including tangible evidence of extraterrestrial life, the meaning of crop circles, and the possibility of unlimited sources of clean, non-combustible energy being accessible right now…a truth that would completely revolutionize the way human beings live on Planet Earth!

I ask Foster about his decision to include all these seemingly unrelated topics, and how this all relates to a world where we can all thrive. Again, his answers are fascinating.

In the end I find THRIVE to be a timely and relevant film, and a critically important artifact for our times. While I don’t expect all of you to agree with everything in the movie (as I am sure it will be controversial), I believe it is worth checking out and listening to our interview because THRIVE’s perspective certainly provides a few important things to consider.

In the end, it is up to ALL of us to decide how we can reach the Tipping Point and thrive together in our world…and I am looking forward to all your feedback!

The interview provides a glimpse into Kin’s brilliant mind and the stages of cultural development with an exploration of the emergent integral worldview we are presently entering. Ken offers the best concise description of the sixth great shift we are living through I have heard. You can listen here.

And, Seth Godin’s new book, We Are All Weird, describes this same shift through the lens of a celebration of choice, of treating different people differently and of embracing the notion that everyone deserves the dignity and respect that comes from being heard. The book calls for end of mass and for the beginning of offering people more choices, more interests and giving them more authority to operate in ways that reflect their own unique values. For generations, marketers, industrialists and politicians have tried to force us into little boxes, complying with their idea of what we should buy, use or want. And in an industrial, mass-market driven world, this was efficient and it worked. But what we learned in this new era is that mass limits our choice because it succeeds on conformity. As Godin has identified, a new era of weirdness is upon us. People with more choices, more interests and the power to do something about it are stepping forward and insisting that the world work in a different way. By enabling choice we allow people to survive and thrive.
